Lacy edging pattern

Hi. I’m making knit squares for an afghan. Once I put them all together I would like to knit a continuous lacy border around it; however, I’m finding it difficult to find one that I can work along the edge. Is there such a pattern?

Thank you for any insight/information.

Are you looking for the edge pattern or a square that works with it? If you crochet that would be the easiest way. Picking up hundreds (thousands?) of stitches to knit would be really hard and require really long cables.

How big will your afghan be? I think the easiest way would be to work an eyelet border around it. This link has some border patterns which of course you may have already looked at.

I was looking for an edge pattern, but now see what you mean by picking up all those stitches. So I guess I need to just make one long edge pattern and attach. Thank you.

Thank you, I will check this out.

There are some other possibilities. You could knit each edge separately and either leave the ends open or increase at the edges of the borders and mitre the corners.
This afghanhas an applied border which may be what you’re suggesting. It could be attached as you knit by knitting together a stitch from the border and one from the blanker at the join.
The queen of edging patterns is Nicky Epstein. There are 2 books with loads to choose from and they may well be in your public library.

I like the idea of attaching as you go along. After a few inches it would be easy to see if you’re getting the right number of rows for it all to lay flat instead of doing a billion sts and then finding out the border should be longer or shorter to not pucker.
