Lacewight yarn that's *not* wool?

I was wanting to present my Mother-in-law with something that would wow her when we go on vacation in October. She’s sorta picky, so I decided to make a shawl/wrap/stole. (maybe this one, if it isn’t too terribly complicated http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2005/12/patternia.html) Problem is that I can’t find any laceweight yarns that aren’t wool. She has issues with wool. Any ideas?

What about an alpaca/silk blend? Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud? Beautiful shawl!

Fleece Artist / Handmaiden have some gorgeous silk blends

Can it be fingering weight? Red Heart Luster Sheen is an amazing acrylic.

I don’t have a suggestion for you as my local yarns would not be
available to you but if you are on Ravelry you can search yarns by
weight and fiber type so that might give you some ideas!

Perhaps a 3/2 Mercerized Cotton would work…available from Yarn.com/WEBS and made by Valley Cotton.

google a bit - there are lacewieghts available in linen, hemp, silk, mohair, cashmere, tencel, acrylic, etc.

This is going to sound stupid, but I though Alpaca was another kind of wool

Alpaca comes from … Alpacas

Seriously, I’ve heard that people allergic to wool can use alpaca - it’s supposed to be nearly hypo-allergenic

for more than you probably wanted to know

I love alpaca yarn and the animals are just so darn cute

technically alpaca is a “wool” but it is not SHEEPS wool. Many people who have problems with sheepswool will not have the problem with cashmere, angora, alpaca, vicuna, qiviut, etc, etc.

I’ve been wanting to make a lace project for a long time, looking for this yarn makes me wonder if I’m in over my head…LOL

I still want to make it though. I guess I won’t learn if I don’t. The problem is that I’m afraid of getting a pattern/yarn and then not being able to do it.

I used Shimmer for a shawl for my SIL. It’s 70% Baby Alpaca, 30%Silk. She doesn’t have a problem with it. Made her some socks with 100% merino Wool… She can’t wear them… Heck, she can’t even touch them…

Lace Sensations is 100% lace…but it seems like a bit more of a fingering weight to me…despite thier claims…

You might think about doing a “mini” version – about the size of a small table runner – with regular yarn and larger needles. The pattern works from the center to both ends, so work a few inches (3or 4 pattern repeats) in one direction, go back and work the same length in the other direction, then do the border. That should be enough to give you an idea as to whether you’ll be able to handle the project. And the regular yarn and larger needles will make it go more quickly and easily than working with your lace yarn. You’ll save wear and tear on your expensive yarn and if it doesn’t work out you’ll still have time to find something more to your liking.

Good Luck!

You can make lacey things in fingering, or any weight yarn. I’ve even made some in bulky weight.
