Lace vs Fingering weight yarn for pattern

Hello all!

I have started work on my Christmas presents for this year, and I have a question about yarn weight.

I am doing this pattern. The recommended yarn in the yarn builder is Shadow Lace yarn, but I really like the variegated look from the picture (which is not sold on knitpicks). Unfortunately Knitpicks doesn’t have a variegated yarn in lace weight. Both Hawthorne Yarn and Chroma Fingering Yarn have the colour variation that I’d like.

My question is, how much is this substitution going to change the pattern? I have only worked with fingering weight a bit, and never with lace weight. Would this make the scarf really bulky?

Thanks!

Quite a few people have used fingering.

No, it won’t make it bulky. It will just make it a little bigger which isn’t really an issue with scarves unless you’re making a huge jump in yarn weight.

I’m doing the same thing with a different pattern right now.

Thanks Jan : ) Bigger shouldn’t be a problem, you’re right. I’m pretty new to knitting so never thought to look on ravelry. Silly me. Anyway, I’m happy to get to use the other yarn. Thanks again!
