Lace help with yarn overs

Hello- brand new to the forums, but I have learned a ton from Knittinghelp.com in the past year, and I’ve been knitting for over a decade.

Regarding my lace problems, I have successfully knit a feather and fan pattern, and now I’ve moved on to something more complicated. I know when I yo on an all knit or all purl row, I just add an extra wrap in the same direction. However, I am confused about directions such as k5, yo, p2 and the opposite p5, yo, k2. Do I wrap the same direction as the previous stitch (k5, yo,bring yarn to front, p2 then p5, yo, bring yarn to back, k2) or do I always yo the same direction I knit?

I hope this makes some kind of sense- if I seem to have it all wrong, PLEASE let me know!!

Wendy

after you finish the k5, bring the yarn to the front between the needles, around the top of the right hand needle, and back to the font to do the next purl stitch.

finish the purls, the yarn is already in the front so bring it over the top of the right hand needle to the back and knit the next stitch.
This one doesn’t use near as much yarn as the first case (so makes a smaller hole), so I usually try to keep the yarn loose as I go over the needle and knit the next stitch.

Excellent- that helps a lot.

Now, when you work the yarn overs on the following row, do you always work into the side of the yarn on the front of the needle or the side that is closest to the needle tip?

They should be the same - the leg in front is closer to the tip. However, if you do a backward YO from a knit to purl by just laying the yarn loosely over the top of the needle from back to front, then on the next row you work into the back leg which will be closer to the tip.
