Knowing when to switch to longer circular needles?

I’m making a cowl and I’m supposed to use a 13(9mm) 16 in. circular needle and a 15(10mm) 29 in. circular needle.

The instructions say to cast on 48 stitches on the 16 in. one and then increase the stitches and circumference as it is worked from the neck to the shoulders. It says to switch to the 29" circular needle as soon as there are enough sts to do so.

My question is…WHEN IS THAT? Nowhere in the instruction does it say to switch, and right now on my needle I have about 60 stitches on it and seems to be getting a bit crowded, but I’m just not sure. I don’t want to switch if I still don’t have enough sts yet. Any advice?

I think switch when you feel like the stitches are at risk of popping off the needle tips or they feel too crowded to work comfortably. If you’re still ok when you have all the stitches on there (generally speaking) you should be ok to stick with those needles. Sounds like you may need to switch after a few more increases, though.

No need to freak out!! There aren’t any knitting police hovering around waiting to catch you the minute a mistake is made!! If you feel like there are too many stitches collecting on the shorter needle, then go ahead and switch it!

It’s hard for us to tell you exactly when to do “the big switch” since we can’t see your work. But I also understand about not wanting to switch too early. It all depends on how thick your yarn is and how comfortable you feel working with the stitches.

It’s up to you!! Be sure and post a pic when you’re done!
