two thirds through my ball of yarn, I’ve come across a knot holding it together. Is this usual?

Its quite a loose flaky knot, so I’m going to cut it out and knit as if I was adding a new ball. Is that the right thing to do? or will I cause myself problems?

Many balls have at least one knot–it stinks, but it happens. What you plan is a great way to handle it.

Yep, knots happen. :shrug: I do what you are suggesting, cutting it out and starting as if it’s a new ball. It works.
