When pulling from the center of the skein, I always get a huge knot. I end up spending half my knitting time undoing the knot. Is there a way to avoid this? Should I not be pulling from the center?
I have the same problem. I have started pulling from the outside and rolling into a ball prior to knitting.
I think you may be less likely to get knots if you pull the yarn end out from the looser of the two openings in the skein.
Knots are away of life for me. I would think if you pulled from the outside it would lessen them happening though.
When I pull from the outside, the label rips… and I like having the label intact as long as possible to keep the skein together. I just pull out a bunch from the center and untangle it if that’s how it is. Sorry, I don’t understand why that’s such a big deal for some people. Or maybe it’s because I don’t mind detangling yarn.

I pull as few loops of yarn from the middle as i can
then i just losten the ball up untill i find the end
it usually does not take much time a min or two
and I just commit to knit at least that much yarn at first sitting
but thats ust me
i am not as anoyed by knots as most
maybe I M odd

That makes two of us, I guess. I mean, you have to get the yarn out of the skein to knit with it in the first place, does it matter how much comes out?

sometimes, the label has an arrow that tells you which end to pull from. usually, they tuck the end from the outside into the middle on one end – you pull that end loose, and then you can pull from the middle on the other end. but yes, there is usually a pretty good glob that comes out right at first, tho i haven’t run into any probs past that first handful that comes out right at the beginning.
all of which is negated if you’ve had to buy yarn that’s been “handled” in the store, so there’s tails hanging off everywhere! why does it always happen with the best colors??
try looking for the arrows, tho – they really help!
