I’m making Knitty’s Amused and have found some comments that the raglan shaping makes for “wings” under the arms. Is there a ratio or something that I can use to make sure that I increase to the correct # of stitches?
I’m making the size small b/c others have said it runs big…(I have about a 36" chest, upper arm is about 11.5" and my stitch gauge is 4.3 stitches/" and row gauge is 6.75 stitches/".) Is that enough info?
This is my first adult top-down raglan (not my first sweater, though) and I’m trying to figure out when to join for the underarm and get it RIGHT!
Basically, knit the pattern for your size, put the sts on yarn or additional circs and try it on. It might be a good idea to have the sleeve sts just barely meet at the underam, then CO about 1-2" worth of sts between the front and back. When you do the sleeves, pick up sts in those cast on ones, and decrease some over the next couple rows if you need to make the upper arms smaller. Sweaters that don’t have some underarm sts tend to not fit as well and it puts some strain on those sts. After you’ve knit a couple inches below the underarm, try it on again and see how it looks.
I’ve got it on a 60" circ, but I’m not sure how far down I’m supposed to go before I do the division for sleeves. I’m up to what the pattern says, but it seems like it would be a little too close to the armpit. Do I keep going with increases or just knit a few rows?
Your row gauge may be slightly shorter than in the pattern. Have you tried it on yet? Do that and see how close to the underarm you are. Also think about how you’re going to wear this sweater - with a light shirt, heavier shirt - you need to allow a bit for ease over other clothing. The extra sts at the underarm can keep it from being too tight without it flaring out there.
