Knitty Monica question

I am ready to start http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring07/PATTmonica.html for my DD, question is , since I want to make this on circulars not straight, what length circular do I need ?
I am making a size 10.

Thanks

I can’t help you with the needle thing but just want to say I think I need to make that pattern for my daughter too. That is so cute. You must post pics when you are done it.

Any circ needle 24" or longer should be fine.

Thank you , I have the Boye set, so I am ready to go. I would be knitting now, but this job thing gets in the way! LOL

I used 24 inch length. I just finished it Monday- pics soon- gotta connect the card reader back to the computer. Hubby is doing something with my computer cable…

Next time I make it (yes, I’m doing t again) I"m converting it to doing it in the round. all the seaming made me a little nutty… but I think it turned out really really cute. its a fun pattern.

for future reference, anytime you’re not sure what kind of circ to use, just make sure that your circ length is LESS than the finished circumference. You can’t knit a 20 inch hat on a 24 inch cable.

It’s a straight needle pattern, so it’s knitted flat. So it’s more a “width” issue than a “circumference” issue.

I made a size 4 on 24" circs, but knitted flat. I’d like to knit the next one in the round, but it’s a size 2- I couldn’t even join the circle in the size 4 because my circs were too long- so I know it won’t work in size 2. Here’s a pic of the finished product in size 4 if you want to see:

You could use a longer circ and do it Magic Loop.

How do I convert it to knitting in the round ? I was just going to do each flat piece and then put together?

I have made one scarf and a few dishclothes so this is my first project .
I want to do good.

To convert it to in the round, you simply cast on twice as many stitches as it calls for (since you’re going to do both sides together instead of front and back separately) and then mark the beginning, join the round, and knit in circles until it’s as long as you want it to be. Then do the same with the ruffle, then attach them in basically the same way as the directions state, only you’ll do it all the way around instead of one side at a time. That way you have no side seams to deal with.

There’s a good video on knitting in the round on this site.

If you would rather knit it flat, the seams really aren’t that difficult, they are straight seams up the sides of the shirt. And, of course, there’s a really good video for it on this site!

That’s how the original pattern is- flat pieces then seamed together. and its easiest that way- I just am one of those who don’t like the seaming part. (lazy- even weaving in the ends seems annoying sometimes!)

I’m going to measure around the kid, look at my gauge for the MC of the yarn and do a little math for the MC. I.e. if she is 20 inches around, and I get 20 stitches for 4 inches; 20 x 5 is 100 stitches to cast on in the round for the MC.
Then double it, plus two (I think) for the CC/ ruffle. (I’d have to read the pattern again- you might not need the +2 if its in the round.)

I haven’t measured her yet or swatched my second set of yarns, so those are just example numbers.

Please someone correct me if that plan is wrong!!

as I understand it, you can’t just double the flat pattern and put it in the round.

Hope that helps a little, MKZ
