Knitting with two strands together

When a pattern calls for “with 2 strands A, cast on 24 sts. Work even Garter st for x inches”, does this mean that you double knit each stitch? In other words, am I casting on 2x24 stitches and working 24 double stitches, or am I casting on 2x24 stitches and working 48 stitches?

you hold 2 strands of yarn and knit as if you only had one strand. Right now I am doing this and I have 2 balls of the same yarn working. So just CO 24 stitches as you normally would.

You’ll have 24 stitches to work then.

Do you then work the 24 stitches with both strands of yarn for as long as the pattern calls for it? Sorry to be so dense…
