Ok so I have an idea for a scarf with a design in the middle. Its kinda like with a swirly stripe going length wise and Im knitting circular to hide the whole “color mess”:gah: . However due to the fact that the stripe in the middle is going all over the place (kinda like a ribbon falling length wise) I cant seem to keep the fabric stay flat. It bunches up where I change colors. If I knit to loosely between changing colors there are holes between the two colors, if I knit to tightly they fabric bunches up where the colors change. what can I do??:hair: I figure the best way to go is where you knit the color on top of the already knitting fabric, but I cant find a tutorial on it?? Any other I deas? Please help :-)
When you are knitting in the round you need to be doing fair isle knitting. (You shouldn’t be cutting and joining.) Is that what you’re doing? It does take practice not to pull the floats too tightly. I’ve heard that if you knit inside out so the floats are on the outside they stay much looser. There is a video in under videos/advanced techniques for knitting fair isle.
If it’s just a small section that you’re changing the color for and it’s not feasible to carry the yarn all the way around, I’d suggest knitting the scarf flat (but double-width) and then seaming it up the long side later.
Ingrid is right. I was picturing it larger, but if it’s a small or narrow design then flat is probably a better way to go.
