Knitting with thicker wool

Hello,

I’m new here and have been teaching myself to knit for a few weeks. I was really pleased when I managed to get to the point where I was knitting neatly and evenly but I’ve recently started knitting with slightly thicker wool (on 6mm needles) and it’s all gone a bit wrong again. For some reason, the first few rows are always a complete mess and very loose, especially the first one, even though I try to keep them tighter and under control. Is there a different technique I should be using?

Every time I have hit a problem so far I’ve just kept knitting and knitting and knitting and eventually I’ve worked it out and managed to correct it, but it’s not happening this time! :wall:

Thanks in advance for any help,

Beccy

How thick is the yarn? If it’s thicker than worsted weight (#4 on US yarn labels) you need larger needles. Like at least US11/8mm.

I can’t remember off the top of my head what the yarn is, but the label said it required 6mm needles, which is what I’m using.

Thanks
