Knitting with others!

I picked up knitting again this summer after not having knit anything since I was 13 yrs old and forced to knit in school. (I then knitted a pair of mittens for my younger sister as it wouldn’t take me as long as mittens for myself would… Three years later my brother knitted her a hat for the same reason.)

Well, none of my friends knit and I’ve never knitted in the company of other knitters. I discovered that tons of people around the world get together once in a while to knit. I really liked that idea and looked for a group doing just that in the area I live in. I had no success.

Yesterday on my way home from work I stopped by my LYS to get myself a new project. Guess what??? She wants to start a knitting group in her store! I signed up immediately and we’ll meet tomorrow night and then one evening every third week for a couple of months.

So far, only two has signed up, but hey… I’ll still get knitting company!

That’s wonderful! When I go to my LYS Friday I’ll find out if there’s a knitting circle or anything :thumbsup:

My LYS has “Knit For A Cause” on Tuesday evenings and an informal knit gathering on Thursday evenings. Of course, sometimes we are our own causes. I don’t get to go as often as I’d like, but I can go in during the day and just sit in the shop and chat with the owners all afternoon.

Most LYSs have an “open knit night” or something of the sort…Mine is on Wednesdays. SO much fun! But, bring a “mindless” project. Its REALLY hard to count or pay any kind of real attention when you’re having so much fun chatting! (or, when you’ve had a glass of wine, which so often happens! :oops: )

I want to knit with others… Angelia was telling me something about a knit in around our area… I’ll have to ask her again.

Congrats on finding a get-together! :cheering: I’m looking forward to getting together with locals here. There are two local groups I belong to but I haven’t been able to make any of the meetings so far because of my schedule. My three-day weekends for the next 4 months or so will make that much easier.

The owner of my LYS said she had a woman visiting her wanting to have knitting company but not being able to get together in the evenings. She usually came in on the afternoons a couple of hours every week to get some knitting done when the owner of the store was there. I thought that was so neat. Too bad I can’t do that myself as I work in another town…

I was thinking about starting a bag tonight at the get-together but after reading your post I have reconsidered… The bag would take too much thinking as I want to mix a few different patterns and come up with a great stripe pattern… I guess I’ll buy some fancy yarn and knit an indoor scarf for my mother. Just plain stockinette on big needles.

Somehting tells me that we’ll probably end up having coffee, tea and cookies rather than wine but I can imagine you’re having lots of fun on your get-togethers.

I hope you can find the time now with a new schedule to get together with your local groups. Imagine having two groups! :smiley: I’m thrilled about the one I found…

Btw, I spent a year studying in Ontario a couple of years ago. After my last semester I drove from southeastern Ontario (near Toronto) to Calgary and from there I went to Edmonton and then Vancouver and Victoria. But, what I wanted to say was that stopped in Winnipeg for a night and I had some really good ice cream there. Bought in a “caravan” (or whatever the English word is) down by the river.

I hope so too. There is quite a bit of overlap between them, but it would still be nice to be able to get out and meet people IRL that I can talk knitting and crocheting to without them rolling their eyes at me.

Winnipeg is a beautiful city that I would recommend anyone travelling across Canada to stop and see. My FIL {who is from bush country in northern BC} was surprised at just how many trees we have… we’re pretty proud and protective of our urban forest! The Forks {where the two rivers meet} is a traditional trading/meeting area back from the times of the fur trade and even when it was just native tribes here. Our local groups organized our Knit Out, Crochet Too at the Forks Market last year. The Booger Bag I’m doing as my Knitting Olympics event is based on the traditional colours of the Hudson’s Bay/Northwest Trading Company’s wool blanket. They had the first trading post on those rivers, and parts of the original fort still stand in downtown Winnipeg close to the Forks.
