he llo I am making an Afghan with 3 colors of yarn I am working A strip with the three colors which include cables. I have two questions. 1 how do I switch colors and 2. how do I work with the three colors without getting them tangled up.
Hi! Do you have a link to the pattern or it’s name? That would be helpful to know in order to be able to help you with the switching of the colors.
When I’ve worked with multiple colors, I’ve put the balls in separate bags inside of a larger bag.
unfortunately I do not have a link to the pattern As the pattern is very old.basically each strip consist of 30 stitches 10 from each color . the middle color is Then separated to make one half cable and another half cable twisted with each of the other colors and each cable consists of 6 Stitches. I hope this helps
Something like this? http://knitting.livejournal.com/9212987.html
ETA I’m wondering if it’s safe to assume these are to be done as intarsia, not stranded.
I do know in the pattern it says wrap the unused yarn around the next yarn and pass the unused yarn to the back.
So the colors are worked in blocks, then. Do you use each color in every row? I’ve not done intarsia work myself, and I don’t have any experience with wrapping the yarns. What I would do is make sure that I wrap the yarns the same way every time; I use sticky notes to help me remember details like this.
Yes, definitely color blocks worked in intarsia. Here’s a video that shows you haw to twist the yarns so you don’t get a hole where the colors change.
As for the balls of yarn tangling, yes, they do that. If you twist the yarn on both the front and back of the afghan, the yarns will tangle on the front and untangle as you knit the back but sometimes you just have to stop and pass the balls of yarn over and under each other to keep yourself sane.
Good luck with the afghan. We’d love to see a photo when you finish if you’d like to post one. Sounds like a lovely pattern.
