Hi! I’m a relatively new knitter. I am trying to work a new scarf pattern that requires I knit 4, purl 4 (repeatedly) but somehow, between the two sets of 4 I am getting a hole some incases. I’m wondering if anyone can give me a hint as to how to fix this or what I might be doing wrong.
Thank you!
Could be a number of things; a bit hard to tell without seeing what you’re doing.
The most likely one, though, is to remember that when you switch between knit and purl, the working yarn (the long end) should always be brought to the front or back by going between and underneath the tips of the needles, not over the needles.
If you’re doing that, then make sure that you give a little tug on the working yarn (but not too tight!) when you pick it up to yarn over to form the new stitch. Also make sure that you are not letting a long gap form on the needle between the last stitch you worked and the new stitch, which will give you a loop of yarn.
Does something in that help?
It’s pretty common to be looser going from a purl to the first knit. I think this may help you, it helped me.

Thanks
I think you both nailed, specifically in reference to a gap between the too, and I’m working on fixing my tension. I am also going to try the suggestion litsted on that page. Thanks again!

Jan, Thanks for the link on the knit to purl gap for Western style. I guessed from the description that Western style is in contrast to Combined Knitting (in the Old Way).
hfrazier, this KH video by Amy may help when you get to the “twisted” stitches.
