Knitting the thumb on mittens

I am a newbie knitter, and am attempting my first pair of mittens. Everything so far is going great (I think), but cannot figure this thumb part out. Here is what it wants me to do:

11th row: K27. Turn. Cast on 1 st. P13 (including cast on st). Turn. Cast on 1 st. K14.
***Beg with a purl row, work 9 rows in stocking st.
Next row: (K2tog) 7 times. Break yarn. Thread end through rem sts. Draw up and fasten securely.

I have done the eleventh row, so at the “beg with a purl row…” am I just turning again, and stocking stitching it for 9 rows?

in trying to figure this out, I read the next step and it says to

" Sew thumb seam. With RS of work facing, join yarn to last st on right hand needle. Pick up and knit 2 sts at base of thumb. Knit across sts on left hand needle. 34 sts."

HELP!!! Is there a video or something showing how this is done???

Can you post a link to the pattern? And give the name of the pattern?

Here is the link to the pattern. I think I have done the thumb, but now its the " Sew thumb seam. With RS of work facing, join yarn to last st on right hand needle. Pick up and knit 2 sts at base of thumb. Knit across sts on left hand needle. 34 sts."

Well. I’ve never heard of seaming that way so I’m stumped. I’ve made a lot of mittens, but they were done in the round and not seamed at all. If I was going to seam it I’d probably use mattress stitch, but this is saying to knit. Hopefully someone else will know. Sorry!

These directions are actually separate.
“Sew thumb seam.” You’ve just finished knitting back anf forth on the thumb sts and then decreasing sts at the tip of the thumb, threading a long end of yarn throught the sts on the needle and tightening them up to close the thumb. Now take that same end of yarn and use it to sew the thumb seam from tip to base of the thumb. Mattress st, as Jan suggests will work here.
Now for the sts that have been hanging out while you were knitting the thumb. “With RS of work facing, join yarn to last st on right hand needle. Pick up and knit 2 sts at base of thumb. Knit across sts on left hand needle. 34 sts.” You’re to start with the last st on the right hand needle. I’d put it back on the left hand needle, join the new strand of yarn and knit the st, pick up two sts at the base of the thumb and continue across the sts on the left hand st.
