Hi,
I’m knitting a sweater for my husband, and am concerned that the pattern will be too tight around his stomach. The only measurement provided in the pattern is for the chest, and his belly is larger than his chest. Should I increase the number of stitches in the belly section? Front only? Decrease for bottom ribbing? Thanks for any guidance. I’d like it to be flattering on him.

You might be able to try doing a combination of increases, decreases and short rows to keep it a flattering fit, similarly to how women with an ample chest would when knitting a more fitted type garment, except obviously you’d be doing a different shape!
Does he have an old shirt that fits well? You could take it apart & get a good idea of how to shape it.
But I agree that forming shorter sides and longer in the middle will help. I would guess the increases & decreases should be scattered & not lined up like it would be for a woman’s bust dart, so as not to be too obvious. Quite a challenge. Good luck.
Thank you for your feedback. I think I’m going to just follow the pattern. When you mentioned using an old shirt, I realized that the clothes he typically wears is not custom sized. I think it will be fine. Thanks again.
