Knitting straight on DPNS

Hello!
I’ve finally conquered double pointed needles, and am making myself some wristwarmers, but I’ve come across a problem. My pattern says to knit straight in order to create a thumbhole. How do I do this??

Pattern is as follows:

Thumb Opening: (This section WILL BE KNIT STRAIGHT, not in the round.)
Next row (RS): Knit all sts. Once you’ve knit the last st on the last needle, flip piece over.
Next row (WS): Purl. Once you’ve purled the last st on the last needle, flip piece over.
Repeat last 2 rows, 6 more times.

Any advice would be great!!!
Thanks!!
Lindsey

You turn it.

You’re thinking too much. Just because you’re knitting on needles used to knit in the round doesn’t mean you can’t turn just like you were doing a piece flat.

Just knit it on 2 needles back and forth.

Hey everyone!

Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I’m actually about to cast this on and have basically the same question, and the previous responses are still confusing to me. Do I still use the 4 dpns I’ve got my stitches on? Drop down to 2?

Or is there a video someone can direct me to so I watch this in action?

Don’t get rid of any of your needles, but turn where it says to as if you were working flat and were at the end of a row. Then work back over the stitches you were just doing. If you work over enough of the stitches you may be working from one needle to another of your dpns but just ignore the needles and work the stitches you need to, if that means moving across a “gap” then do it. You are never knitting with more than 2 needles at a time, in this or any other situation.

Ok, so…

Next row (RS): Knit all sts. Once you’ve knit the last st on the last needle, flip piece over.
Next row (WS): Purl. Once you’ve purled the last st on the last needle, flip piece over.
Repeat last 2 rows, 6 more times.

When I reach that first row, I knit across the 31 stitches I have, and when I reach stitch 31, turn it around and purl back across? And do that 8 times total?

Yes, after st31 turn and purl back. Repeat the 2 rows 8 times total (16 rows total) and that will give you a gap for the thumb. At some point you’ll begin knitting across the gap and back into knitting in the round.
