Knitting socks

Hi,
When knitting socks do you usually use 4 inch dpn’s or 6 inch?

I have only ever used 6" dpns. I think 4" ones would be good for fingers on gloves that were done in the round, but I would be worried about stitches falling off the ends doing socks on 4" dpns.

I’ve used both and I like using the 4 inch, but you do have to be careful of the stitches.
