Alright, so I don’t even know if this is possible and I am not quite good enough to pull this off yet anyway, but I am making some pretty impressive washcloths so I don’t think an Infinity scarf is too far in my future.
Can you knit pictures into larger stretches of material?
I was wondering if it would be possible to knit a scarf or blanket into something that looks like “Starry Night” by VanGogh. So, a brilliant blue with swirls of yellow here and there. Working in two different spools of yarn for stripes looks scary enough, but I just want to know if this is possible. Has anyone tried anything like this?
Yes, you can knit small or large pictures into scarves, sweaters and dishcloths. If you look for intarsia or fair isle knitting you’ll find examples using both techniques or combinations. There are instructions for both here, about halfway down the page.
There is also double knitting which avoids the problem of a “one-sided” image where the right side looks good but the reverse, not as pretty.
I like the idea of interpreting Starry Night in knitting.
An infinity scarf? Definitely time to give it a try.
I am so happy to hear this! I was thinking that I would have to learn to Crochet to do something like this and I’d really like to master knitting before taking on another hobby (although I have heard crochet is much easier and would have been better to start with).
I will have to look to see if there are any existing patterns out there.
An interpretation of Starry Night on an infinity scarf just seems appropriate somehow. Maybe what I really mean is a Starry Night inspired infinity scarf.
I crocheted first. Now that I finally learned to knit (and am still learning how) I find knitting to be easier and wish I’d started with knitting. Knitting produces a different fabric which is IMO more suitable for many things including my current obsession: sox. It varies from person to person and people who know both will usually have a definite preference for one. Knitting is the top obsession for us here but if you went to a crochet forum you’d undoubtedly find people who can knit but prefer crochet. Knowing how to do both is great.
