I am knitting a shell from Creative Knitting, and either I am not reading the pattern right or I am “lost”, Eyelet shell is the pattern in May 2009, It says , bind off at beg of row 5(4 sts) twice then (2 sts) twice. I am starting with 86 sts and supppose to be at 76 after bind off. My way of thinking beg row 5( 4 sts bind off ) then knit across and bind off 4 start next row then knit across and bind off 2 then knit scross and bind off 2. But my math says that is 12 instead of 10. What am I seeing here it is shaping armholes and neck. The way it written sounds like all bind off on beg row 5 but that would be wrong. HELP
Is it possible that you’re binding off only on one side for now, starting at row 5, 4sts twice and then 2sts twice? And then you’ll work the other side?
If not then it does sound like straight forward armhole shaping, 4 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows and 2sts at the beginning of the following 2. Either way, it is, as you say, 12.
It may be a typo in the pattern and you should really end up with 74 sts. I’d go with that; if you’re on the back then you’re correct - BO 4 at the beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 at the beg of the following 2 rows.
