Knitting projects for teenage boys?!

My brother is about to be 16 in august. I don’t have much money and I’m not very skilled yet so I was wondering what you would knit (by august 22) for a 16 year old, skate boarding, gaming, weirdo of a little brother. lol I love him to death but he has a little too much of my grunge/punk/goth phase in his memory (he’s 8 years younger than me) as though it were cool. lol. He is a sweet kid and will LOVE me to make him something. I was thinking a few small things? I’ve looked around the net but even patterns for “men” are so Froo Froo. I’m not at the stage where I understand enough to make a pattern on my own for anything so…what do you think? what would you make?

TIA!

these socks would be awsome http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring07/PATTbmp.html

or this (or smthing similar) http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=17113.0

depending on his level of gaming geekary: http://community.livejournal.com/knitting/5229847.html

and a teenaged boy into the whole skater thing can never have enough beenies right: http://tiajudy.com/ribcaps.htm

or fingerless gloves/handwarmers (now with extra skulls) http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fingerless-mittens-2

Anything with skulls up his alley?

This would be easy and you could do it w/o the pink bow.

Skate punks still like stocking caps don’t they?

Black with maybe a charted skull. You don’t need a pattern to make a cap.

Once you know the size and your guage this will figure out your decreases. http://www.thedietdiary.com/knittingfiend/tools/knittingHat.html

Find the skull you want and run it through here, http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/index.php

I think this hat is really cool for a young man:

And the book Son of Stitch 'n Bitch has a some really great patterns for a young guy.

My friend’s teenage son loves his gauntlets. They’re really just like large cuffs or wide bracelets. I know you said you aren’t experienced enough to make a pattern, but this would just involve casting on enough stitches to make something about three inches wide, in whatever yarn/colors you think he’d like, and knitting k1, p1 ribbing until it’s long enough to go around his wrists, then seaming the cast-on edge to the bind-off edge. Then make another one!

(Alternatively, you can knit them in the round, casting on enough stitches to encirle the wrist, and knitting for three inches or so, but that might be infinitesimally more difficult, depending on your experience with knitting in the round.)

Thanks so much all of you! I really love the illusion knit scarf but have never followed a grid or whatever that is. I’m not sure I understand how it is done. It would look great in black and green, his favorite colors. lol

I think i’m going to make my whole family a series of this kind of stuff, gauntlets, hats, scarves, and they will each be warm all winter! You all are wonderful.

WE need a “things to knit for guys” thread or something. lol

Yep, I’d say a beanie would be perfect.

I think so too. I just saw him today and the first thing I did was take his hat away. I could have made it easy. lol and I bet he paid like 20 bucks for it. lol I hadn’t seen him in a while and he was just about my height when I say him last. Now he is 4 inches taller than me!:roflhard: I’m so glad he isn’t going to be 5’ even like me. Thank you all SO MUCH! he is going to love these ideas! now to learn Fairisle knitting! lol and cables!:knitting:

I have a teenage boy and I think your right on track with your thoughts here! My son wants all these things and he is into all the same stuff your brother is.

happy knitting

LOL I saw him today and I discretely asked very obvious questions about color combinations, I grabbed his hands and looked at wrist size compared to mine and compared arm length to mine and then I even stole his hat for a minute. The kid isn’t dumb but he is totally lost. lol He said he’s kinda scared of what I might be up to.:roflhard: I just can’t wait to get started but I have to move first  My BF said AFTER we move and get SOME stuff unpacked we are going to HOBBY LOBBY! Yarn, Here I come! :woot: :knitting:

or go the this web site and there are loads of knitting charts so you can chose what you think he would like and put the image on it. Maybe a bag for his gaming gear.
