Knitting pattern yarn choice

Hello!

I was just wondering if anyone could please help me with choosing an appropriate yarn weight for a jumper I would like to knit…I’ve been going round in circles and just cannot work out what to use…

This is the pattern ^^^^^ - it uses ’ Green Mountain Spinnery yarns, 4 ounces/250 yard skeins’ which I cannot find online, and the gauge is ‘Stockinette Stitch: Using size 6 needles (or size needed to obtain gauge): 20 sts by 28 rows will make a 4 inch square.’

Do you think aran would be the best option? Or DK? I cant seem to find any that match with the gauge correctly :frowning: I’m fairly new to jumper knitting so apologies in advance if this is a really basic question…

Thank you!! Ellie x

Www.yarnsub.com is a good place to find alternatives for yarns, though a lot of it also comes down to the way you knit. I’d suggest making a tension square with the yarn and needles you intend to use, before making any final decision. Also keep in mind stitch count is more important than row count, especially for garments with simpler stitch patterns. You can adjust length more easily as you’re working, than width.
By the look of it, double knit yarn is more likely to be what they used I think. Either way it’s a really nice looking design!

Wow fabulous sweater!

The name of yarn does come up on yarn sub but the skein length is different.

What I do if I sub yarns is work out how many meters the original yarn would give and how much is needed and then look at how many meters come per ball of the yarn I want to use, to make sure I get the correct amount.

Looks like that is an aran weight but you could use DK if you get gauge with it as the gauge looks like a “standard” gauge for DK.

I think the main thing for this sweater is finding a yarn which has the range of colours you will need as not all yarns come in suitable colours.

Hmm, as you’ve discovered, that’s not a specific yarn, just a reference to yarn from a particular company. Maybe the designer drew from more than one yarn line to get the colours?

But we can deduce that the yarn is 250 yards to 4 ounces and non-superwash wool, since all the yarn from this company is non-superwash.

So to get a similar look to your project, you’d want to choose a wool that knits to a similar gauge (recommended gauge on ball band), a similar weight to yardage ratio, and a similar treatment and plying style.

I can’t see whether the yarn is a singles or multi-ply yarn. Maybe you could contact the designer and ask exactly which wool she used if you live in America and want to get the same one.

Welcome!

You might take a look at the yarns that were used for the projects listed on the Ravelry page. Click on Yarn Ideas at the top of the page or go to Projects over on the right.

I think that the best way is to search for sweaterscapes company website and try to find which yarn they sell. Or another way is to find an email on their web page and to write an email asking your question.

Just go on their website and click to “Contact”

It says on the pattern description that it is worsted weight yarn which is a common weight in North America. Ask for that at your local yarn store and I’m sure they can help you match the wool.

Thank you all so so much for your help and suggestions, I managed to get some lovely aran weight wool in the end and made sure I knitted a tension square before - good job as I had to go up 2 needle sizes! Thanks again I really appreciate all your advice (:

I hope we get to see a picture when it’s finished.
