I just learned to use DPNs and I am wondering how others position theirs.
I have the needle I am working off of with both ends on top of the other needles. This means that every time I come to the next needle, I have to rearrange them so both ends of the one I am using are on top. I assume most people have them overlapped and have one end on the bottom so that you can just go around and around without adjusting every time. I tried to do it that way but it feels awkward and I was getting ladders…
I do what Mike does. I never thought about it until now. The first few rows, I seem to do more adjusting. As I get going, I will occasionally move them around, but rarely. Once you get used to them, you just “do it”, kwim? It becomes second nature.
Have fun with dpn’s. It’s my favorite way to knit.
It’s my favorite way too… but now I’m not sure what I do… I don’t think it’s always the same. I do know that there was a time that I put all on the working ones on top… maybe I still do but I’ve just gotten so used to it that I don’t even notice that I do it anymore…
I don’t have anything with me on dpn or else I’d knit a few rounds and see what I do…
I keep the two I’m working with on the top–both ends of both needles on top of the others. I’ve never had a problem with ladders or uneven stitches with them held this way, but everyone’s different from everyone else. I suggest trying different methods, practicing each a bit, and seeing what works for you!
Thanks for the advice. :mrgreen: I have been working an my Jaywalkers (all I have to show is a ball of yarn that’s getting raggedy since I have ripped them 4 times already) and have tried the left on top, right on bottom. I still prefer to have both ends on top but it’s just ridiculous to adjust each needle each time. I am getting some ladders. But I’m getting more comfortable with the new arrangement.
I have been ripping because of the gauge though, not the ladders. I am going to post about that in the General forum. ARGH!
The length of the dpns will make a difference too. The six inch ones are much easier for me to work on because they seem to “adjust” themselves. When I work with the longer dpns, I’m doing more fiddling around as I knit.
But I’m getting more comfortable with the new arrangement.
