Knitting neckband - dpns?

Hi - I am about to pick up stitches and knit a ribbed neckband for a child’s sweater - the instructions say to join the right shoulder seam first. Do I have to knit the neckband on dpns - can’t really visualise how I would do it on straight needles? :??

Many sweaters have you join one of the shoulders and then knit back and forth for the collar. You then have to seam it on one side.

I always do mine on circs after both shoulders are seamed, but the flat way works, too.
