Knitting my first sock. confused about direction

http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Beginning.htm

using this sock direction, broken down for newbies, but ive just now cast on 40 stitches, divided them onto three needles and knitted with a fourth needle the k2p2 stitch as directions have requested that i do.

im confused at this point: i have again three needles not four in the round. i knitted one needle out and the 4th needle which i introduced now carries those stitches that ive knitted, but if i continue with that, now the “working” needle, i will knit all of the stitches onto that one wont i???

well ive just completely messed it up trying to sort it, bvut if someone could please explain this to me, i would be most appreciative. ive gone mad.

okay wait. I am not sure if i understand what you have going on right now. You started with three needles with stitches on them and one empty to knit with. you knitted on to that needle right? that should have emptied one of the three needles you had stitches on so that you can use that to knit with now. Does that make sense or did i misunderstand what you have going on there?

yes thats exactly whats going on.

what im scared of is that another needle, be it this one or one of the others is going to lose their stitches, too and then im down to two… and then one

im not trusting this, i dont think. am i? am i getting freaked out over nothing?

Don’t worry, that won’t happen. You work from one needle to another each time. You’ll still have stitches on three needles, transferring stitches to your empty needle one at a time.

ok.

im just gonna trust the pattern!

ok wait.

i always knit with a fourth needle?

Always knit with the empty needle. You’ll have one each time you knit from one needle.

for that particular pattern you do, yup. unless it tells you otherwise somewhere down the line. are you still sitting with one empty needle right now? if you are just keep going like you are and trust that silver won’t lead you wrong!

i at least figured out that i begin using the fourth needle by knitting with the last cast on stitch rather than the first. i think this is where i became really confused. im to work with the first cast on, not the last.

im doing it! i feel like i felt when i rode my bike for the first time. totally elated and proud.
