Knitting my first hat

I’m not quite sure how to put this but i’m knitting a hat for a friend, he wants a skull cap, and he gave me one he already has as an example. I do not have a pattern, but i think that I can figure out how to make one up, that shouldn’t be a big deal, plus i can use other hat patterns i have. My problem is that I don’t know how many to cast on for the appropriate size and i don’t know how to gauge it since i don’t have a pattern that gives me a gauge. I think once i get started i can figure out the stitches and decreases, but starting is my problem. :?? To tell you the truth, i’m not sure even what question to ask so i can get started. If anyone has any advice on how to go about this, i would be extremely grateful! thanks!

This is a good pattern to use. You can make a skull cap or one with a ribbed fold over edge like I did. It’s good for figuring out how many to cast on for any hat.

Thank you! I just need a little push in the right direction!
