Knitting Math

I am making this Nautilus shawl and it says that I should continue until there are 413 stitches on the needle. I currently have 390, but according to the pattern, each repeat is 16 stitches. So plus one more repeat is only 406- I am not sure what to do about this…https://www.cascadeyarns.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/DK726_Heritage6_NautilusCrescentShawl.pdf

It’s such a pretty shawl.
The pattern works out to 24 repeats after the setup rows. Maybe some missing yarn overs? No matter. You can either stop with 390 or work another repeat of the pattern for 406 or 422sts. It depends on how much yarn you have and the size of shawl you would prefer.

Thanks so much! I think I will work it until 406- it is weird that I don’t have the right amount- all my holes line up! Just one more thing- on the centre stitch for the cast off, is that separate? Like do I just work the pattern until the centre, do the centre stitches then go back to the pattern where ever I left off?

Finish with a row 4 of the repeat. Are you planning to add the lace border? If so, follow the directions that come next for the border which will bind off as you work the lace pattern. No need to bind off sts after the repeats of the pattern stitches. You’ll be knitting body sts together with the border.
It’s similar to this but of course your pattern isn’t the same as this one:

Something is not adding up here. I cast on the 8 stitches, then after row 2, I do not have enough stitches to do k 2 tog - I only have one stitch left at the end of row 2
Row 1 (RS]): Sl1, K2, YO, K2tog, K, YO-2x,
K2tog
Row 2 (WS): YO, K2, YO, K2tog, K4, K2tog

You’re going to be joining the lace edge to the main body. The one stitch left at the end of Row 2 will be knit together with a stitch from the main body. This is the way the main body sts are “bound off.” The stitch count is going to change across the lace edge pattern.
On every WS row (the even number rows) you’ll k2tog one lace edge stitch with one body stitch.
Is the chart easier to follow than the written directions or the other way around?
I’ll try this out on the needles just to make sure.

I have tried it twice and still I only have one stitch on the wrong side on row 2. I am looking for a different applied border that I can add

I’ll give it a try. There are loads of borders in the two Nicky Epstein books, “Knitting on the Edge” and “Knitting Over the Edge.” Of course there are probably patterns online too. The Nicky Epstein books are in my public library so you might check yours for either or both.

It worked out on the needles. The stitch number is going to change as you knit. In some rows you are knitting two body sts together (rows 2,6 and 10) and in other, knitting together a body stitch and a border stitch (rows 4,8 and 12).
You can try it out on a swatch so that you spare your good yarn or you can certainly search out another border pattern. There are plenty out there!
