Hi can anyone help me . I’ve just bought a new pattern for a child’s jumper and I don’t quite understand an instruction written.

There are probably a series of decrease rows to follow. The row just worked places where those decreases should occur along the row.
What is the name of your pattern?

I’m confused with the instructions following the decrease row on the back. I’ve never read this before about vent .
I can’t quite see it in the photo but there are sometimes designs with a vent or opening at the sides and possibly the back of the sweater longer than the front.
You can quote a few rows that are confusing if you like just not large portions of the pattern due to copyright.
Knit rib 2 rows 4 times then next row is
P8,(k1,p1,k1,p2tog,p7,p2tog) twice, k1,p1,k1,p29,(k1,p1,k1,p2tog,p7,p2tog) twice, k1,p1,k1,p1 . 99sts.
Last row sets vent decs.
Cont as set, working 2 sts less in each vent after dec row, work 18 rows decreasing 1st each side of each vent on every foll 6th row to 75sts.

There is apparently a little “flare” at each side. The decreases as given in the row will allow that to happen. You’ll be working the decrease row every 6th row for a total of 3 times. Each time the number of stitches between decreases will be 2 fewer.
Row 6. P8,(k1,p1,k1,p2tog,p5,p2tog) twice, k1,p1,k1,p29,(k1,p1,k1,p2tog,p5, p2tog) twice, k1,p1,k1,p1 .
Row 12. P8,(k1,p1,k1,p2tog,p3,p2tog) twice, k1,p1,k1,p29,(k1,p1,k1,p2tog,p3,p2tog) twice, k1,p1,k1,p1

Thank you so much. I have never heard of the word vent in a knitting pattern before and then how the instructions were worded just confused me. I just couldn’t get my head round it. I can start knitting now , once again many thanks.

Hi all.
I have just bought this cardigan to do also.
Now I am also very confused.
So I understand that row 6,12,18 are the decreasing rows.
I’ve followed the pattern and now on the start of the decreasing bit.
So I need to knit 18 rows with rows 6,12 and 18 as decreasing what pattern do I follow for rows 1,2,3,4 and 5? My next row is on the right side.

Follow the pattern established in the previous rows without any decreases. This works for all the rows between the decrease rows. Essentially knit the Vs and purl the bumps except for what looks like seed stitch columns. It looks like 3 sts in seed. Work those as you have been in seed stitch.
