Knitting in the round

I am working on the pattern Chunky Knit Beanie and I thought you knit one row, purl one row to make garter stitch, but I am doing it and it doesn’t look right. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong? I got the pattern from the blog, “A Friend to Knit with.”

If you’re knitting flat you knit ever row (both sides) to make garter stitch. If you’re knitting in the round you knit a row, purl a row to make garter.

If you’ve only done a couple rows keep going. It tends to take a few rows before it looks right. :thumbsup: Cute hat!

Thanks, I will keep trying. It looks like there is stockinette stitch between the garter rows. I expected the garter rows to be close together, kind of stacked right on top of each other.

That’s normal. If you look at the front and back of stitches you’ll see that one side looks like a purl and one side looks like a knit. That’s what creates that effect. Once you knit more rows they will stack up closer together. :thumbsup: Not sure what yarn you’re using, but blocking or washing helps a lot, too.
