So, I am kind of a novice in knitting in the round. This is only my second project on circular needles.
I am knitting a clutch from One Skein. I am using size 15- 24" cir and it said to cast on 60 sets. Done. It only takes up about half of the cir needle. Is this OK? It seems like its going to be kind of hard to work with. Why did the pattern call for such huge needles for only 60 sets?
:?? Is it possible that they want you to work those 60 stitches back and forth to make the bottom of the bag and then pick up stitches to work in the round on the way up the sides?
CO 60 sets. Place marker and join for working in the round, rnd begins at side of bag. Knit 12 rnds, placing another marker after 30th set to indicate other side of bag. Inc rnd. K1, k1f&b, knit to 2 sts before next m, k1f&b, k1, sl m, k1, k1f&b, and so on…until bag reaches 64 sets, then 10 more rounds, before the same increase, 68 sets…7 more rounds, then done.
There are some increases, but still…only 68 sets at the end? Maybe its just generous room to work with? It’s just hard to stretch the yarn from one end to the other to join for the round and make it tight enough to be seamless.
The term ‘SETS’ is not a common one. Could that be the problem? That each SET is made up of a number of stitches? Or are you misreading stitches for set. :??
What is the weight and gauge of the yarn you’re using?
Are you using the same or a similar gauge yarn that the pattern calls for? That many (or few) stitches on a 24" needle might work using a bulky/chunky or 2 worsted strands held together, but not for a lighter weight yarn.
Maybe I’ll just try and work with it and see how it goes. Perhaps once I start the actual stitches it will get larger and easier to work with.
On my other project I did in the round I used 10 1/2, 24" needles and cast on 150 sets using Patons Classic Merino. The 150 sets fit on the needles nicely, but when I got going, it seemed I had to shift the yarn around a lot more.
Thanks, I’ll check that out and bother one of these people.
I’ve started the clutch, and it seems OK, but I’ve had to pull the yarn so that the cord for the circs is kind of warped. I only need to do a few rounds before I can do an increase and hopefully that will make it a little easier and less tight.
I pull the cord out lots because a cast on only measures about 80% of the finished size, so after you knit a couple rounds and inc, it should work out okay.
