My first try at dpns and I was doing seed stitch… It was a nightmare! That’s probably why I want to get them out of the way first on my next project but, but writing this I have just realised ut won’t be so bad as its stocking stitch… Ahhh just plain knitting
Knitting in the round... Tips please
I do my hats in the round with a traveling loop. I like to use a 36 inch circular needle, but you can go up to a 40. http://www.knittingwomen.com/explained-the-traveling-loop-method-for-magic-loop/
Ohh I’ll have to have a look . Do you think travelling loop will be better than magic loop for toddler sleeves?
Why don’t you try both and see what you think? I mainly use it for hats. I have beautiful Knitter’s Pride and Addi 16 inch needles. But I find them uncomfortable to use because the tips are so short. The nice thing about traveling loop is that I’m buying fewer needles. The 36 inch circular works well for me for almost everything. I do traveling loop for hats up to the crown. I switch to magic loop at the top when my decreases get smaller and smaller. This also has the advantage of not having to switch to double points, which can be expensive if you buy a set in every size. I do like the Addi flips, but the needles are too short for larger projects.
Right now I have two sleeves I’m making at the same ti9me so they’ll be exactly the same. I’m doing those on two circs. I started each (at the wrist) on dps, then got them each to circs.
I like using 5 dps (sts on 4, work with 5th). When using dps I always go one or 2 sts from the next needle to where I’m working. Say I have ten sts on each of 4 dps. I’ll work 11 or 12 sts onto free needle, then from the next take those sts and again take one or two from the next needle. That way I’m not changing needles in the same place each time and no loose sts.
I do the same when working with two circs.
Try various ways and see what works for you, not for the other person. We’re all different.
Thank you for that. Because I did have loose stitches and utnwas obvious all the way down the sleeve hence wanting to try another way. I also only had 4 dpns… I Can see a 5th one could be helpful.
I’ve tried working the same thing with 4 dps and yes, it can be done. Try hard to work at least one st to the needle you just finished.
I’ve always loved magic loop (as already mentioned, above!); and realised that it’s a great semi-technique to use in any tight corner such as I’ve found in some baby jacket patterns, where you find yourself fiddling about in a teeny space under an arm, say. So of course I had to reinvent the wheel for myself, not realising that OF COURSE someone had long since done that! And eventually found, in the very helpful Cocoknits tutorials on YouTube, the attached link for what Julie Weisenberger calls “Modified Magic Loop”; I realise I’m adding this to an old topic, but maybe it’ll be useful to someone who posted way back??
