Knitting in the round on 2 needles pattern

Hi all, newbie here!

I have a pattern I titled the above subject. You knit on 2 regular needles but it comes out doubled like you did it on a circular needle. Neat um??

It would be but I forgot something as it is not doing right. I got this pattern from a very old Polish lady who is no longer with us so I can’t ask her so was hoping someone would know what I am talking about.

I know you cast on an odd number of stitches. Then you k, p, k, p to end, turn and forgot the rest. I have 2 scarfs upstairs done but upon looking at them for answers they weren’t talking. I have tried starting row 1 with k and row 2 with p also started each row with k. What ever the sequence is it has escaped me. It actually finished double where you can pull apart the 2 sides. The overall appearance on both sides is of the garter stitch. It makes up into a wonderful thick cosy scarf and hate to think this is gone forever.

If anyone has heard of this technique I would love some guidance as I have played around long enough and Christmas is getting closer everyday. Was hoping to have some done for gifts to family in Scotland where winters can be harsh.

Thanks for you help,
Cindy N

I think you’re describing double knitting and it’s not k1, p1. I do think you need an odd number of stitches for casting on, but you k1, sl 1, k1, sl 1 across ending k1. The next row you knit the stitches you purled in the previous row, and sl the stitches you knit. It’s been years since I’ve done this, but I think that’s the basics. This link shows a video of the technique http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/advanced_techniques/ but is with a specific project. And you can search this board and Google “double knitting” and come up with more links than you need.
