Knitting in the round help

I tried to knit in the round last night and ended up with about a foot of yarn in between the left and right needle after my first row. Can anyone guess how this happened? Usually when I knit otherwise, the same thing happens but it corrects itself at the end of the row through the tail. Help?

I’m not quite sure what you mean. Was there a gap between the stitches, or was the yarn hanging down? Any way to post a picture? Were you on circs or dpns?
