Knitting in diagonal

I saw an episode of Knitty Gritty about diagonal knitting. I really liked how the piece turned. But I’m confused on how to go about it. I know you start with:

CO 3
purl
Increase, knit to the lalst 2 stitch, increase, knit
and you’re suppose to continue until the piece is at the width you want.
What I’m confused about is how do you go about decreasing?
I’m interested in making rectangle piece, a little afghan for my baby.
Can anyone help?

thank you,
JOy

To decrease if you just made a stitch then simply knit two together and then knit across or purl which ever your row calls for. If you increased by doing a yarn over then simply you would need to knit two together yo and knit two together again and this will decrease down. Hope this helps.

I am fairly new to the knitting world…however, I think I may have a great pattern for you. I am taking a knitting class and there is a lady in the class with me that makes tons of baby blankets. She uses the basic dishcloth pattern (very similar to what you are talking about) for all of the ones that she makes. Here is a link to the pattern that she uses. http://majorknitter.typepad.com/photos/patterns/dishrag_and_magazine_photo.html

I have made 2 dishcloths with this pattern and they have turned out great. It is a quick and very easy pattern. It goes really fast and you don’t really have to think about what you are doing. I am fixing to start a blanket with this pattern for my 1 year old daughter. I hope this helps.
