Knitting from a chart

I’m just starting the Gingko Crescent ( and haven’t knit from a chart before. I’m a little baffled by it, since it looks like it should be knit from the top of the chart down instead of bottom up. Can anyone offer any help on how to make sense of it? Thank you!

It’s knit from row 1 of the chart as indicated. Don’t worry about the shape of the graph. You’ll knit the odd number, right side rows from the right to the left and the even rows from left to right. The pattern increases with yarn overs and so the “no stitch” boxes are replaced by pattern stitches. You’re knitting from the stockinette area to the lace at the edge of the scarf.

If you’re in doubt, try one pattern repeat on some scrap yarn so that you can practice the sts and see the direction of the pattern at the same time. Wow, stunningly beautiful scarf!

Thank you! I think I’m just getting too stuck on the shape of the graph. I just noticed the arrows pointing up in the 33rd row, and there’s no symbol for that in the key; does anyone know what that symbol means?

That arrow looks like a double decrease (a slip one, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over or slip 2, k1, pass slipped sts over) based on the stitch count across the row.
