Knitting first row, long thread between needles, why?

Hi all,

Everytime after I have cast on then started knitting my first row (no matter what stitch) the yarn seems to get longer and longer between my needles leaving me with a long tail.

This has been fine but now I’m making booties and have to cast on half way through the piece it’s very ugly and a pain.
What am I doing wrong and how can I stop it!?

Thanks in advance

You may be using the finger loop cast on which can cause a long thread between stitches. Try the cast ons on the Free Video tab at the top of this page under Cast-On and see which one you like. Different cast ons work better for different purposes (e.g.tight or stretchy edges). When you need to cast on in the middle of a project like the booties the Knit Cast On works well.

Use another cast on like the knit or cable or even LT. The backward loop CO does this and isn’t a really good one to start a project with.
