Knitting first pattern - Please could someone kindly explain this...

on foll 12th rows inc 1 st 4 times

Thanks!

Every 12th row, increase by 1. Repeat those 12 rows 4 times in total, so you increase by 4 stitches over 48 rows, or at least that’s how I’m interpreting it. What is it you’re making?

Thank you, that makes much more sense! I am making a child’s sweater. it says st st inc what does this mean please? Thank you

I’ve never heard of that increase, to be honest. My best guess is to do a knit based increase on the right side and a purl based increase on the wrong side, but only because I think ā€œst stā€ means ā€˜stocking stitch’ and some increase rows will be on the purl side.

St st will mean stocking stitch (also called stockinette)

It’s likely all the increases will fall on the knit side with it being on even number rows. I don’t think purl increases will be needed here. That’s my guess.

@Duggee have you ever done an increase?
You could probably do kfb which is knit into the front of the stitch, then knit into the back of the same stitch. This makes 2 knits on the right needle and uses up only 1 stutch, therefore increasing by 1.

Does the pattern tell you which part of the row to increase at?
It might help to know which part of the sweater you are on.
Also look at the additional notes on the pattern, it may give you a description of st st inc at the beginning of the pattern, or at the end perhaps.
