Knitting direction

Why do I keep reversing my knitting direction? I don’t realize I have messed up until several rows later. I’m a newbie!

Hi and welcome to KH. What do you mean by “reversing my knitting direction?”

I am knitting mittens and after I knitted the cuff I started the palm of the mitten and after about 10 rows I noticed I had reversed the stitch direction and I’m not sure how it happened.

Are you knitting stockinette and now have the wrong side facing you? Are you knitting flat (rows) or in the round on double point or circular needles? A link to your pattern if possible would be helpful.

You’re probably getting turned around because you’re not used to recognizing the front and back of stockinette stitch. I still mark the front of pieces I’m working on if there’s the slightest doubt, and I’ve been at this for fortymumblemumble years. A safety pin, a scrap of off-colored yarn, a bobby pin–it doesn’t matter what kind of marker you use, just so long as it can be removed without damage and you know it means “this is the front/public side/outside/part of the work that is meant to show.”

When you put down your knitting, either pin the right side where you finished or punch the right-hand needle through a piece of scrap paper. If you need to, make a note on it–“Row 103 finished” or whatever.

Just about everybody makes this mistake when they start knitting, so don’t feel bad.
