Knitting "Coffee Cup" corner

I hate seaming things, so I am wondering if anyone has a good technique for putting a corner into something, one like the bottom of a coffee cup, as opposed to just knitting the sides and bottom and seaming them. The sharper the better.

My initial thought is to use a hook to thread each stitch under the purl bump a row or 2 down, but if anyone has better (and oreferably tested) ideas, I’d appreciate it.

Had a test, and my initial idea actually works quite well. The first one I tried went 1 row below, and doesn’t hold well (or put another way likes to be an obtuse angle), while the second try I did 2 rows down, and it holds quite well at 90 degrees. 3 might even do tighter than 90 degrees, but I only need 90.

Still open to any better ideas though, I love learning new techniques.

I’m not clear about what you’re doing. Are you using a pattern or winging it? If I want a square bottom on something I would probably start with a center out square for the bottom then either do a turning round (such as a purl round if doing stockinette) or bind off then pick up stitches along the sides. The second way might provide more stability to the shape. Corners could be done with a ‘faux seam’ type of thing if that seemed appropriate. I’ll go out of my way to avoid seaming so I would most definitely work this in the round.

If I want a really sturdy bottom piece I’d consider working a square in Tunisian crochet. If not worked with a larger hook TC tends to be very stiff and board-like. I’d then pick up stitches around the sides for knitting the rest of the piece.

HTH but if I’m way off track feel free to say so please.

I am kinda winging it on a geode, and am just trying to get a nice sharp corner on the “face”, without just seaming stuff together. What I did there, that actually works quite well, is go to the wrong side, use a crochet hook to go under the purl bump 2 rows down, and then hook the live stitch under that bump. Then put it on the needle, and knit it normally. Note, it makes the stitch quite tight, and leaves a purl ridge along the front.
