Knitting Christmas Stockings

Just an observation, actually, after years of experience knitting Christmas stockings for every child I’ve ever known.

I’ve always loved making them - very elaborate personalized stockings. What I especially like is that they are kind of stretchy so you can fit just about anything in them, rather than the reverse, which is specifically buying items that fit in the stocking.

However, a word of warning. I find that, after a few years, the stockings have stretched …and stretched…and stretched, until it takes a lot more to fill them up.

I’ve always used knitting worsted yarn, but lately, I am using bulkier yard which - I hope will control the stretching…

Anybody else have any thoughts on the subject?

I know I’m really late to this topic, but I think lining future stockings would prevent this. I’ve made plenty myself, never lined them (I know, hypocritical of me!) but something like felt or cotton would probably suffice.
I love coming up with designs for them!

I wonder if washing them and if OK running them through the dryer could help with the stretching. Can hand wash wool be blocked back closer to the original size after washing? I bet that’s already been tried.
