My best friend asked me to make her a pair of fingerless mittens with Gryffindor’s house colors (she is a rabid HP fan) and I found a pattern for cabled mittens that I think that she would really like. I’ve made a cabled beanie before, but with only one color of yarn. I was thinking of making the main part of the glove gold and then have the cable crimson, but I have no clue how to do this. The only thing that I have found for this would be using intarsia, but apparently that cannot be used in the round. Any suggestions for what to do? Please and thank you!
Instead of knitting the mittens in the round, you could add two extra sts on the pinkie side and knit the mitten back and forth in the flat. You would seam the mitten down the pinkie side. Then you would be knitting back and forth and the cable in a different color would be no problem.
Duplicate stitch patterns on the mittens is another alternative but I don’t think I’d like to do an entire cable in duplicate stitch.

How wide will the cable section be? Most likely flat knitting will be better for that purpose.
The other option is, to include the color somewhere else.
How about a strip of 2 stitches that runs next to the cable band on each side in that other color?
You just cut a length of yarn for each strip and knit the stitches with that (be sure to twist it once with the main color so that there are no gaps) and run the main color behind that section.
Or maybe top edge and bottom edge of the mitten in contrast, middle in main color?
I just had this book from my library - see if yours has it:
Mastering Color Knitting by Melissa Leapman. There was a section, 2 pages or so, called Intarsia in the Round. I only briefly skimmed it, but she talked about a couple ‘work arounds’ for how to do intarsia in the round. I can’t tell you how she did it, as I was in a “check out knitting library books and look at the pretty pictures” mood - not a learn how to do something new mood.
For that matter, try a google search for intarsia in the round and see if you come up with anything.
