Knitting across gap

Instructions say:
K6, place next 4 sts on waste yarn and cont knitting across gap to end of rnd.

I knitted 6 and then knitted the next 4 sts but used “waste yarn” but still kept the stitches on the same dpn

Don’t know what it means to “knit across gap.” Do I leave those waste yarn on the same dpn or should I put it on another one…or what? Trying to find a video or something to show me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW - am knitting “monsters”

Based on these instructions I’d say you are supposed to knit 6 then take a piece of waste yarn and thread it into a tapestry needle and slide the next 4 stitches off the left needle onto the waste yarn. Leave them hanging there on the waste yarn and then keep right on knitting the next stitches in the row across the little gap you formed by leaving those stitches on the waste yarn.

What is going to happen next to those 4 sts that are on the waste yarn? Take a look further along in the pattern and see what it says to do with them.

It’s difficult to say without seeing the pattern. If you would post a link, it would be helpful for us. Go to the next row in your pattern and count how many stitches total you are supposed to have for that row. Are the stitches four less than what you had in that previous gap row? If so then Salmonmack’s instructions are correct. If the stitches on the next row are the same amount as the gap row, I think what you’re supposed to do is to knit those stitches onto a piece of waste yarn, slip them back onto the left needle, and knit across those waste yarn stitches with your working yarn. Here’s a video which will explain how to do that. I use this technique all the time to make what they call an afterthought mitten thumb. I suspect that may be what’s going on here, but you’ll have to add up the stitches on the next row to be sure.

You’re right, but I don’t think that is what they are saying because when you do that there really is no gap, you “zip” it closed so to speak.

Yes, this sounds more like when you’re doing a top down sweater and put the sleeve sts on scrap yarn and close up the gap, leaving a bit of a hole. Might be the thumb of a mitten though, and knitting the sts with the scrap yarn, slipping back to the left needle and reknitting with the project yarn would work. I hope the OP lets us know what she’s doing.

I think she says she’s knitting “monsters”. I take it that she means actual little monsters and not just what I call my projects that have gotten out of hand.

LOL… or the kids!

Then these 4 sts are probably meant to be picked up in for the arm, so either method should work okay.
