Is there anyway to make a striped scarf without it looking so bad on one side?
There will always be the dreaded change-of-color purl bump on one side, I’m afraid.
You could knit a scarf in the round and let all the color changes be on the inside of the tube and just stitch up the ends.
Ingrid knows whereof she speaks. You could crochet a border around the entire scarf and hide it.
You could knit in the round so it’s the same on both sides. Otherwise the purl bump will show.
If you work in 1x1 rib the purl bump changes shouldn’t be too bad. Or you may like to try this method to see if it makes the changes less noticable.
If you want a garter stitch scaft you could fudge it by working reverse stocking stitch in the round (purl every round), but knit the colour change rounds. Or work stocking stitch in the round, purl the colour change rounds and turn inside out when finished.
Julie, how interesting! Have you used the method in the video? I must try it.
Julie, thanks for sharing - I’ve got to try it!
I’ll be honest, I haven’t tried Tygah’s method for changing colours in ribbing. As I implied my previous post, I don’t think colour changes in 1x1 rib are too bad. Obviously, something worked in, say, a 1x1 rib in a fine yarn with tonal shades will give a different result to 3x3 rib in a thick yarn with clashing shades.
I came across the video when having a rumage on YouTube and didn’t think anymore of it at the time, but, now tlazer has asked this question, I realise it could be the answer for some people.
I’ve found some of my best links rummaging around on youtube. Some of them I really wish I could find again. “Expect the unexpected.”
Self striping yarn. It will be your new best friend! :knitting:
