Knitting a pattern with multiple colors

I inherited my mother’s knitting supplies to include Christmas stocking patterns. I have a new grand-baby that needs a stocking. I can follow basic instructions but the Mary Maxim pattern I’m following doesn’t tell me how to handle all the different yarns at once. There is a kitty on the front of the stocking. I’ve looped the new yarn to do a stitch or two but the same color may not be used until I get to the other side of the kitty 20 stitches later. I’ve been dragging the yarns across the purl side on the stocking but it where the color changes are there are holes. The first time I tried this I didn’t stretch out the yarns and the tight yarn had the effect of cinching in the stocking where the design is. Hopefully I’ve explained this well enough. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Check this video. I think it might prove helpful.

A stocking for a grandbaby is such a cool project. I hope you get the hang of the color work quickly so you can really enjoy making it.

I watched the video and I think this is exactly what I need. I am so appreciative of your help. Thanks a bunch::cheering:
