Knitting a lacy edge border - pattern confusion!

Hi - I am finding it impossible to understand what this bit of my pattern is talking about! I am praying someone can explain it to me as it’s driving me mad! It is to create a lacy edge border to be sewed along the edge of a lovely cardigan for my baby - the cardi is finished all but this bit!

Cast on 6 sts (note: sts should only be counted after the 4th row) does this mean knit 4 rows of garter stich first before beginning to follow the pattern??

Row 1: (rs) K1, K2tog, yf, K2, (yf) twice, K1
I don’t get when I am supposed to do the yf twice - is if after each of the stiches in the K2?
Row 2: K2, K1 tbl, K2tog, yf, K3
I don’t have the right amount of stiches to do this after I am done with Row 1!
Row 3: K1, K2tog, yf, K5
Row 4: Cast off 2 sts, K2 tog, yf, K3
These last 2 rows seem to make sense but again I have the wrong number to begin with!

I am sorry if this seems really obvious but it completely baffles me -and this is the first thing I have ever attempted to knit and refuse to let it beat me!

hope someone can help
thanks v much

The first part confuses me too, so I’m afraid I can’t help with that.

The (yf) twice is after the K2. Knit 2 stitches, then wrap the yarn around the needle twice, then knit your last stitch.
You should have enough stitches on your needle to do row 2 properly.
Row 1: K1 (1) K2tog (results in another 1) yf (1) K2 (2) yf twice (2) K1 (1). That results in the 8 stitches you need for row 2. The stitch count remains the same for row 3. Row 4 is a bit baffling until you realize that you use 3 stitches in casting off 2.

thank you SO much! this is incredibly helpful - I will try it tonight after the little one has gone to sleep.

Thanks again, you are so cool!
