Knitting a hat on circular needles

I’m about to attempt my first hat and the pattern calls for circular needles. I cast on and then “join”. What does it mean to join? Thank you,

You’ll need a short circular needle because of the small diameter of the hat. I use double pointed needles instead. If there are going to be a lot of stitches (or very bulky yarn) make sure you get the longer size (10").

you can do a hat on a 16 inch circ or a 24 depending on the size of the hat. when you get to the decreases though you will either need another circ to do the 2 circ circular knitting or DPNs. i always use DPNs personally but many swear by the 2 circ method.
