Knitting a hat for the first time and stumped by pattern

I’m almost done with this baby hat and I got stuck on this part of the pattern up to the finish. I’ve never knitted a hat before so I’m learning as I go. Here’s what I need help with:

Next row K1 (0) [k2tog] to end 13 sts.
P1 row
Next row K1 (0) [k2tog] to end 7 sts.
Begin with a purl row, work 11 rows in st st
Break yarn leaving approximately 16 in thread through remaining 7 sts.
Pull up and secure
Join seam, reversing seam on lower 3/4 in. for the roll of the hem.

I have know idea how to translate the rows with the (0)'s and I also don’t know how to finish a hat so I don’t understand the lines starting with “break yarn”. Any help is appreciated!

The only part I can help you with is the breaking the yarn. Basically all your doing is after you get to the last part, you cut the yarn 16in from the last stitch that you knit, and then threading it through all the stitches on the needle and pulling it tight. That’s basically the only way I can explain it.

I’m leaving the (0) part for Ingrid if she knows what it is… that just stumped me :??

that’s a pretty good way to explain it i think.

as far as the other part…does the pattern say that it is for different sizes? 3-6 months and 6-12 months for example?

I figured out the first part, the (0) doesn’t really mean anything I guess. I did the K1 and then k2tog until the end and ended up with the right amount of stitches and it looks great! Now I just need to figure out how to stitch the seams together…

Check out the Mattress Stitch for seaming.
