Knitting a blanket

Hi everyone, I am a new member from the UK and have recently learnt to knit. I have mastered the basics and am making a scarf using lots of different stitches etc to keep my skills up and my for my next project i’d like to knit a blanket.

Could someone let me know please if I can fit enough stitches for a large size baby blanket onto a normal needle or do they come in extra long (!) versions, or do I need to get involved in circular needles? The pattern I had seen was for around 130 stitches.

Would be grateful for your advice please! Many thanks, Anne

You have the perfect opportunity to get involved with circular needles! I think 130 sts will be unwieldy on a straight needle, however long. Circulars are much kinder to your wrists, easier to use for large projects, and they won’t frighten your seatmates on long airplane flights. You’ll just work back and forth on the circulars without joining the stitches in the round.
Give the circulars a try and good luck with the blanket!

I would use circulars. Knitting on straights may not only be impossible, but they would be uncomfortable trying to hold up the weight of the blanket. Circulars allow the bulk of the project to rest in your lap on the cable.

Use the circs it’ll be much easier. You use them just like straight needles, when you get to the end of a row, turn and work the next row.

Thanks for your replies everyone, i’ve bought a circular needle from ebay so once it arrives i’ll give it a go! x
