It doesn’t matter whether you knit english or continental. That doesn’t affect the stitch. For the record though continental you carry the yarn in the left hand and english with the right hand.
First…are you knitting flat or in the round? It doesn’t really matter for ribbing, but it helps us help you. There are a lot of patterns on that site so if you could link it would help.
You took a picture from what appears to be the back because it looks like purls. Is it possible you’re not purling or knitting correctly? Make sure of that first. Check the videos at the tab at the top of the page or in the link in my signature.
This is 4x4 ribbing in the sample, but it gives you and idea.
Continental - yarn is held in the left hand
English - yarn is held in the right hand
Then you are knitting back and forth, or flat? When you look at your stitches, if it looks like a knit (a V shape), knit it; if it looks like a bump, purl it. After a few rows you should see the rib pattern showing up.
I’m knitting flat(haven’t figured out round yet) and English(though it doesn’t matter). The pattern is the knitted newborn hat on this page…I don’t think there’s a direct link to just that pattern. And I didn’t realize there was a back and front to this project…hmm…I was knitting something earlier and my ribbing turned out fine:shrug:
Did you check the videos? I think seeing what Amy is doing will probably help a lot. You aren’t the only one who’s had problems getting ribbing figured out, we’ve done it and you will too.
I’ve started over and am going to watch those videos now! When casting on,should I leave a certain length of tail. Atm,after starting over, the tail I have left is only about 2 inches…I usually have to try several times before getting enough yarn or either I have too much tail left.
Well it wasn’t looking like ribbing on either side lol…lets hope this time it goes better and hopefully,I’ll eventually have something decent to show you guys!!
ETA:it still isn’t looking like ribbing so I’m thinking it may be the yarn just isn’t showing the ribbing…which makes me sad that I took it apart…I was halfway! Also,I think I may have to start over with the other end of the yarn, the one I’m currently working with his coming apart badly and I’m not sure what to do about it.
OK!I’m finally getting around to finishing this and I don’t understand this part
Cut a 14" yarn tail.
Run needle and 14" yarn through remaining sts on needle. Pull to draw shut. Fold hat in half and whip stitch/sew the side seam.
One more question…I think…btw, you guys are awesome!!
When I go to take it off the needles,do I go back and around that first stitch?Does that make sense? If that video shows,I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet…Thanks!
Yes, start and finish with that first stitch:
Once you’ve threaded the tapistry needle with about 10inches of yarn tail, use it like the right knitting needle. Pass the stitches one by one off the left needle onto the tapistry needle and when all the sts are on the yarn threaded through the tapistry needle, pull the yarn up tightly. You can then tie a knot to secure or go back around the sts and thread the yarn through all or some of them again. As Sue suggested, you can also use this yarn end to seam the hat down to the cast on edge.
I will use that yarn to seam the edge…I’m afraid it will look funny if I go back and over the first stitch…I just don’t want to mess it up!!I’ve worked hard on it.
that still just goes to the Youtube homepage…maybe if I search for it?What should I type in?I tried to find a helpful one yesterday but couldn’t find anything…
I’ve never had a problem posting links before from my iPad so I don’t know what is going on.
I’m on my computer now so hopefully this will work. The link is called How to Knit a Hat and it’s by Howcast. They knit a blue hat then close the top and seam. The part you are asking about is at 1:24 or so.
I like knitting them in the round, as I avoid sewing a seam on them.
Of course I can’t say I PREFER to knit them in the round rather than straight since I’ve only knitted them in the round.
I’ve been practicing an awful lot on “waste” or left over yarn. I use magic loop for them until I start decreasing stitches at the top.
